NIST updates cryptographic guidelines
The revised edition contains all cryptographic standards and recommendations that are binding on federal agencies.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has released an updated version of its "Guideline for Implementing Cryptography in the Federal Government." The new edition replaces a November 1999 version that contained several outdated cryptographic techniques and references.
The 97-page document is Special Publication 800-21 in the agency’s special publication series. It offers structured guidelines for selecting and using cryptography for protecting all federal information systems except those that are national security systems.
Most important, the revised edition contains all cryptographic standards and recommendations that are binding on federal agencies according to the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002.
