What Keeps the Air Force CIO Awake?

What is the No. 1 thing that keeps the Air Force's chief information officer awake at night?

It's the "enemy that we don't know that's in the network," Lt. Gen. William Lord told the media Tuesday at the Pentagon.

To combat this danger, the Air Force's cyber command must be focused on educating everyone in the service -- not just those sitting in a room monitoring computer systems for intrusions -- on cybersecurity, Lord said. That will require a cultural change, which is always hard, he said.

That's not to say Lord was pessimistic.

Training will take some time, he said. "You can't just throw glitter dust in the air and now everybody's wearing this [cyber command] badge because we took a 40-hour class online," he noted, pointing to a badge earned from taking an online cybersecurity course. "It doesn't make you a cyber expert."

But, "I have begun to see the tectonic plate movement," he added.
