Burglary at forensic psychology practice exposes sensitive client data

Healthcare and Public Health // California, United States

Electronic equipment stolen from the Los Angeles office of Sharper Future stored clinical histories, treatment records, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation ID numbers and some Social Security numbers, among other identifying information.

The information was “password-protected and it would be extremely difficult for someone to access it,” a May 21 security breach notice states.

The data did not include personal financial information, the company said.

Sharper Future officials said information on “some clients” was taken, but did not specify the type or number of clients affected.

“It is most unfortunate when events like this happen,” the notice states. “We have taken steps to prevent something like this from happening again as we continue and reaffirm our commitment to protecting confidentiality. “
