Chicago Issues Y2K Scam Alert

Chicago released a community alert last week to warn its residents about scams related to the Year 2000 computer problem.

The Chicago Police Department produced the alert, which lists examples of Year 2000 fraud, including callers claiming to be bank officials offering to put money into "Y2K-safe" accounts and repairmen providing appliances or vehicles with Year 2000 upgrades.

The report gives suggestions on how to avoid these scams, such as calling product manufacturers directly for Year 2000 information and not revealing bank account numbers or other personal information over the phone.
