Federal Computer Week received a top national award this week for its online news coverage.

As part of its 21st annual Publication Excellence Awards, the American Society of Business Press Editors this week gave its gold award to FCW, an International Data Group Corp. publication, for best original online news section. Computerworld, also an IDG publication, took the silver award, and The Industry Standard, another IDG property, was given the bronze award.

The online entries were judged by experienced online publication editors and designers for quality of content and for quality and relevance of graphics. In addition, judges considered ease of navigation and effective use of online technology when choosing winners.

In ASBPE's East Region awards given earlier this month, FCW won third place in the Special Supplements category for "Mission Accomplished," FCW's 10th anniversary special report, which featured the federal government's 10 most successful computer systems of the past decade.

In ASBPE's graphics division, Jeff Langkau, FCW's art director, won two regional second-place awards. One was for the July 20, 1998, FCW front cover, and the other was shared with graphic designer Rob Covey for overall publication redesign.

Civic.com, a sister publication of FCW that covers information technology in state and local governments, won a second-place regional award for its Communities section and also earned second place for the November 1998 front cover photo.
