Print Screen Works 5.5 is a handy little pro-gram from SilverLake-Tech.com that turns the Print Screen key on the keyboard into a hotkey tied directly to the printer. When viewing any screen in Microsoft Corp. Windows, a user can press the Print Screen key and the image immediately prints.

Print Screen Works is configurable. Other keystroke combinations can be used to capture selected parts of the screen and, with only a few clicks, users can save screens and send them through any Messaging Application Programming Interface-based program using the Print Screen Works interface. Users also have the option of assigning password encryption to the JPEG or bitmap screen files saved by Print Screen Works to prevent unauthorized access. MAPI support and password encryption are new features in Version 5.5.

Installation of the software is quick and easy; the installation program fits easily on one floppy disk and takes up 2.5M of hard disk space once installed. The first time the program runs, a shortcut to Print Screen Works is placed in the startup folder so it runs automatically when Windows starts. The miniature program icon appears conveniently out of the way in the lower-right corner of the Windows task bar.

Although Print Screen Works is remarkably easy to use and understand, any user who has difficulty with it can make use of the extensive online manual and help files that install with the program.

Print Screen Works is available on the open market for $30, but SilverLakeTech.com offers a discount of about 10 percent for government agencies.

It is a good buy for any agency, documentation team or software development group requiring the ability to quickly and easily generate images of Windows screens.

A trial version is available at www.silverlaketech.com. One copy of the evaluation version of the program may be used by a single person for evaluation purposes without charge for up to 15 days. Users must purchase site licenses to run Print Screen Works over a network. SilverLakeTech.com offers flexible pricing for site licenses based on an organization's needs.

Remarks

Print Screen Works is a perfect complement to the Windows 95/98 and Windows NT desktop, providing one-key screen capturing and printing, a function many users may wish Windows had in the first place. This version of Print Screen Works goes even further than simple capturing and printing by adding instant MAPI-compliant e-mailing of screen shots and encryption of captured files.
