Sprint, MCI reporting smooth traffic flow

Sprint Corp. and MCI Worldcom Inc., the companies that supply long-distanceservice to federal agencies, were reporting no Year 2000 problems thisevening.

A Sprint spokesman told FCW that network traffic was "just rolling acrossreal smooth" around 5 p.m. EST today—two hours before Sprint's networkwould roll over into processing dates in the year 2000.

"We don't really expect any problems," said company spokesman RussRobinson, who estimated Sprint had spent close to $325 million fixing itsYear 2000 problem.

After 7 p.m.—or midnight Universal Coordinate Time, the time to whichSprint systems are programmed—Sprint reported no Year 2000 problems. "It[7 p.m.] came and went and not even a hiccup," Robinson said.

Meanwhile, MCI Worldcom on its Web site had posted positive "green-light"status reports for four service areas: network and product systems;customer services response; international service; and Internet service.
