SGI sets up federal subsidiary

Silicon Graphics Inc. announced Tuesday that it has established SGI Federal,

an independent subsidiary designed to better meet the specialized demands

of government agencies.

The new subsidiary, with a separate management team and organizational structure

from SGI, will be located in Silver Spring, Md., and will be led by Anthony

Robbins, former vice president of SGI Federal Systems Area.

"This will align all our resources into one business unit dedicated to meeting

the needs of the federal government," Robbins said Tuesday. SGI Federal

will combine the existing resources of its Federal Systems Area division,

including government sales, systems engineering and marketing staff.

SGI federal sales and marketing staffs have been reporting to SGI managers

who were commercially oriented and did not always understand the needs of

government agencies. "We will have 400 people coming to work with one customer

in mind," Robbins said.

SGI Federal, which specializes in high-performance computing and visualization,

will expand the services it offers to "not just provide a box, but to provide

a box which will solve an agency's specific needs," Robbins said.

The subsidiary will provide modeling and simulation solutions, commercial

off-the-shelf systems, data mining, geospatial imaging, geograpraphic information

systems, supercomputing, media streaming and World Wide Web hosting.
