Pioneering programs awarded

Five state and local technology programs as well as a host of federal projects will be honored in July at the E-Gov 2000 show.

E-Gov, sponsored by Andersen Consulting, awarded 20 government agencies Pioneer Awards for best practice e-government programs.

The winning programs include applications ranging from online motor vehicle renewals to electronic procurement engines to improved infrastructure for tax processing. The programs are being recognized for increasing productivity, saving limited resources and improving the quality, timeliness and accuracy of citizen services.

This is the awards program's second year.

Judges included representatives from the General Services Administration, the National Partnership for Reinventing Government and the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as industry representatives.

The following state and local agencies won awards:

* U.S. Department of Education's Office of Student Financial Assistance, for FAFSA on the Web

* Navy Office of the Assistant Secretary, for the LIFELines Quality of Life initiative
