MultiSync LCD1550V delivers the desired minimum

Product review: It's what you don't see in this new 15-inch flat-panel display that makes it noteworthy

It's what you don't see in the MultiSync LCD1550V that makes this new 15-inch flat-panel display from NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America Inc. noteworthy.

First, you don't see much by way of a case. The black case extends a little more than a half-inch beyond the viewable display on each side, which makes for an attractive desktop unit. But the advantages become clearer if you're mounting several displays in a rack because you can fit a lot more viewing into the available space. The MultiSync LCD1550V can also be mounted on an arm assembly.

What there is of the LCD1550V to see besides the display is very cleanly designed. The model we tested had a matte black finish, and the device is also available in white. Eight buttons line the lower front of the unit, and functions are well-marked. The only design gripe we have is with the two pieces of plastic in the back that must be removed to plug or unplug the power or VGA cable.

The second thing you won't see much of in the MultiSync LCD1550V is a high number on the price tag: The list price on the unit is a modest $399.

Of course, you can't expect many bells or whistles for such a low price. There are no USB ports, video pass-throughs or options for digital input. Nor can you feed separate color channels to the monitor. The only inputs in the back of the unit are for power and a standard D-SUB video input.

The display's 1,024 x 768 resolution is sharp and offers excellent color fidelity. The unit's automatic adjustment feature worked well to provide optimal display, and the controls made it relatively easy to make changes in configuration as necessary.

The MultiSync LCD1550V, in other words, is an excellent option for agencies and departments looking for a relatively inexpensive way to deliver a quality display in a small space.
