The best must hire the best

Following is a response to an FCW.com poll question that asked, "Should managers joining the proposed Homeland Security Department have to reapply for their jobs?"

As owner and chief executive officer of my company, I have to be certified to run my own company every year, and my customers rely on me to be the best at my job.

That job is computer consulting, and I have to know everything there is to know about the programs that I sell. My customers expect me to know the ins and outs of each program.

I also have IT technicians that work for me and I expect them to know their jobs inside and out, just like me. In fact, they need to know even more than I do.

Now, if you are going to hire the best, then you better have the best in place to filter out the one that make the grade to handle the job.

It is clear that you have not taken this into consideration when you hired them in the first place, so I would make them be hired again. But first, I would make sure you have the right person in place to be able to handle the job of filtering out the right person for the right job.
