Sun Federal restructures

It's now three units.

Officials at Sun Microsystems Inc.'s federal division have split the division into three new units to better focus the company's government business, said Clark Masters, the company's executive vice president.

The changes were announced in an internal memo Sept. 27.

The federal division had previously operated as a single unit. Now, there are three: strategic sales, tactical sales and international.

The strategic sales group, led by John Marselle, will concentrate on deals that are important to the company's long-term strategic goals, the big government programs, Masters said. Marie O'Brien will serve as vice president of tactical sales, geared toward engagements that are good sources of short-term revenues. Masters said he has not yet picked a vice president to lead the international division.

Marselle had been running a start-up group within Sun dealing with general contracting and, before that, led the U.S. sales team, Masters said. O'Brien was most recently Sun's area vice president for the mid-Atlantic region.

The new structure will help the division retain and strengthen its place as one of Sun's top three divisions, alongside financial services and telecommunications, he added.

"Certainly I want to grow faster," he said. "We are doing well for our government business, it's a huge business."

Tom Kreidler, former president of Sun Federal, left to pursue other opportunities, Masters said.
