HP, Redback create VPN management solution

Hewlett Packard and Redback Networks have jointly created a solution for managing Multiprotocol Label Switching Virtual Private Networks (MPLS VPN). The solution combines the edge routing, Ethernet aggregation and subscriber management capabilities of Redback's SmartEdge Service Gateway with the flexible management capabilities of the HP OpenView Service Activator, according to the companies.

OpenView Service Activator provides a framework for the creation and activation of all types of services, regardless of the underlying network technology. Redback's technology supports both Layer 2 and Layer 3 MPLS VPN services in conjunction with virtual routers.

The layer designations refer to differences in network architecture.

"With the continued deployment of service offerings, service providers face a major challenge managing the associated operating and integration costs," said Michele Campriani, director of operation solutions, network and service provider business at HP, in a prepared statement. "We are pleased to be working with Redback to enable service providers to streamline the deployment of value added services."
