The computer systems of presidential candidates Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain were the targets of sophisticated cyberattacks over the summer, prompting an investigation by the FBI and the Secret Service, Newsweek reports.
FBI and White House officials told the Obama campaign that what it originally believed to be a phishing attack had instead come from "a foreign entity or organization [that] sought to gather information on the evolution of both camps' policy positions—information that might be useful in negotiations with a future administration," according to Newsweek.
