Notable examples include the Agile Design and Production Transformation Initiative, which tapped the VA’s 3D printing network to help meet the demand for personal protective equipment during the pandemic. He has also been instrumental in an initiative that has nearly eliminated diabetic foot ulcers and major amputations among at-risk veterans. The platform has been scaled across 40 VA medical centers, where it has been shown to reduce emergency room visits by 40% and hospitalizations by 52%. Vega sees innovation as a group exercise, his colleagues say, and he fosters collaboration across disciplines, organizations and hierarchies.
