Expert in digital transformation and integrated marketing communications, Michele Bartram joined the U.S. Census Bureau as its first Customer Experience Officer in 2016. Prior to that, she served as Chief Marketing and Customer Success Officer for the Commerce Department’s and SBA’s joint business portal, BusinessUSA, earning the Secretary of Commerce Gold Medal and the President’s Award for Customer Service. Bartram came to BusinessUSA from the Government Publishing Office where she relaunched the US Government Online Bookstore site, blog and digital marketing.

Her first job as federal employee was in 1997, leading an agency-wide customer-centric initiative at the US Mint that resulted in the 50 States Quarters program and her launching the first federal ecommerce site.

She started her career as a systems engineer and technology solution consultant for IBM’s National Federal Marketing Division. After that, she led major digital strategy and marketing initiatives in both the public and private sector in the US and Europe, including building and leading Top 30 ecommerce businesses for some of the world’s largest brands. Some notable clients included: Lane Bryant catalog, Brylane Home, Sears, Rand McNally, Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, Seagram’s, Baskin Robbins International, and iVillage.com.

Ms. Bartram has a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a James M. Johnston Scholar.
