Laura Kroupa M.D. is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO)for the Office of Electronic Health Record Modernization (OEHRM), located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of the Deputy Secretary of VA (DEPSECVA). As CMO, she represents the Department of Veterans Affairs and Veterans Health Administration as a functional champion overseeing clinical strategy and planning efforts for the electronic health record transformation. Her responsibilities include oversight of change management, training, deployment, process re-engineering, clinical interoperability, data strategy, and innovation for the electronic health record (EHR). Dr. Kroupa serves as the primary liaison between the vendor and the functional community and an interface between Veterans Health Administration and Department of Defense EHR communities. Prior to coming to OEHRM Dr. Kroupa served as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer in VISN 15 where she evaluated Information Technology systems (IT). Designed and applied Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) software and applications. Converted and analyzed medical and health data to Insure quality of care across multiple information systems. Leveraged medical and health data to improve services and daily operations. Trained physicians and other medical professionals in IT systems and applications, especially EMR/EHR and computerized physician order entry (CPOE)

Dr. Kroupa has been actively involved in the field of health informatics for over twenty years beginning with the implementation of CPRS. She has interest in informatics education, applied analytics and reducing EHR burden for clinicians.

Dr. Kroupa is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics. She is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She is a member of the American Medical Informatics Association and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
