The federal government plays a dominant role in healthcare through its two major hospital systems (VA and Military Health System) and the funding of health sciences research by the Department of Health and Human Services. HHS, DOD and VA all are modernizing their systems, and increasingly looking to apply artificial intelligence to their massive health datasets. The research firm, Deltek, estimates the government will spend more than $6 billion dollars a year on health IT by 2021.

In this workshop, learn how new technologies are transforming health initiatives and the challenges that scientists, physicians and program owners are addressing. Topics to be addressed may include:

  • Using health data for longitudinal studies to improve treatment
  • An update on the work of Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology
  • The progress and evolution of electronic health records, adoption rates, interoperability and how EHRs are improving patient care
  • The use of machine learning to mine health records for discovering new signs of undetected diseases and the use of blockchain to protect them
  • Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to quickly scan radiology images
  • Exploring how the use of electronic medicine on the battlefield is changing civilian healthcare
