In the future, machines will be essential partners to human operators. Incorporating AI-based capabilities into military systems will improve the quality and tempo of decision-making in complex, combat environments. It will facilitate sensemaking from incomplete and contradictory data streams. And it will enable human warfighters to collaborate with unmanned systems to perform missions. There are, however, significant technical challenges relating to the engineering of AI-based systems and effective partnering of humans and systems.
