That Federal agencies have massive data stores is not up for debate. What is less certain is how this accumulated information can be harnessed for mission support and improved decision-making.
Fortunately, selected public and private organizations have been honing their information collection, attribution, and correlation capabilities in recent years. Increasingly, this practical experience in the emerging discipline of data science, combined with sophisticated analytical tools, is opening new windows into government data stores. This powerful combination of expertise and technology is being applied to improve agency insights and enable relevant support to a range of missions--from fraud detection, to data discovery, to medical research. Agencies have the ability to employ analytics to simplify processes by using the knowledge embedded in their own data repositories, while also fueling economic innovation by making large Federal data sets openly available to third-parties.
