Two new rugged PCs

OEM Micro Solutions Inc. officials have launched two new rugged in-vehicle Mobile Tactical Computers, the MTC-212 and the MTC-215, designed for law enforcement officers.

The MTC-212 features a 12-inch monitor, which is a new size for the company, designed for two-officer vehicles. The MTC-215 comes with a 15-inch monitor.

OEM Micro's new systems have been pumped up with faster processor speeds — up to 1.4 GHz — with Intel Corp.'s Tualatin Pentium III processor. The machines also have LCD monitors twice as bright as previous models and additional input/output capacity.

The computers can hold up to 512M of RAM and come with a minimum 40G hard drive.

Input/output capabilities include two serial ports, including one that is RS 232/422/485 selectable; two USB 1.1 ports; an onboard digital amplifier for stereo operation; 10/100 Ethernet; two FireWire ports; one PC Card socket; one CompactFlash adapter socket; and VGA output.

The machines are thinner and narrower than past models and come in welded aluminum cases that fold flat and pivot 90 degrees left or right. The design of both computers also includes an integrated touch-screen and a waterproof, backlit keyboard with an integrated mouse. The keyboard can be removed from its tray so officers can use it on their laps for more comfortable and convenient typing.

The systems can be mounted in virtually any vehicle with just two screws. Prices start around $5,500 for a single purchase. Volume discounts apply for multiple purchases.
