MCI gets Atlantic GIG
The Defense Information Systems Agency awarded two contracts worth $15.3 million for the Atlantic extension of the Defense Department's Global Information Grid to the government markets division of MCI.
Defense Information Systems Agency officials awarded two contracts last week valued at $15.3 million for the Atlantic extension of the Defense Department's Global Information Grid (GIG) to the government markets division of MCI.
The Transoceanic Optical Transport-Atlantic contracts cover a 15-year lease of four OC-192 circuits from locations in the United States, including the Pentagon and Ft. Belvoir, Va., to points in Europe. Company officials provided the circuits to DISA by using their worldwide infrastructure, said Marlin Forbes, MCI's vice president of defense and international markets.
DISA officials also plan to award contacts for a Pacific extension of the GIG, known as Transoceanic Optical Transport-Pacific, but industry sources do not expect an award for those contracts until early 2005.
