Letter: Cut telework equipment expenses by hoteling

Shared offices or hoteling is a teleworking option. One reader shares how to make it work at your agency.

Regarding "Telework’s weak link": There should not be much extra expense in providing equipment for work at home. The employees need computers whether or not they are in the office or at home. The key is in hoteling (shared offices at the agency).

One solution is to provide encrypted laptops that can be used at home, with an external monitor and keyboard as needed and docked to equipment in the shared agency offices. Another solution is to use virtual desktops where all the applications and data reside in the agency data centers. The employee could be provided an inexpensive workstation for VPN access at home and use workstations in shared agency offices.
