The Veterans Affairs Department plans to award multiple contracts to develop its paperless benefits project.

The Veterans Affairs Department plans to award multiple contracts to continue developing a paperless system for delivering veterans’ benefits, according to an announcement on the Federal Business Opportunities Web site.

The contracts are to develop the technical data needed for the project called the Paperless Initiative. Contractors will also deliver, install and test the development environment, according to the announcement made July 9.

Under the initiative, five types of benefits issued by the Veterans Benefits Administration will be transitioned to a paperless system, according to the VA. The types of claims include: compensation and pension; education; vocational rehabilitation and employment; insurance; and loan guarantees.

Contractors will integrate and configure commercial technologies with custom developed software for the project, according to the VA.

The contracts will start in December 2010.
