In search of virtualization

Responding to calls from Congress and the Pentagon, several Defense Department components are seeking better virtualization technologies.

WHAT: A request for information from multiple Defense Department agencies on virtualization technologies. The RFI could inform a new contract for virtualization at DOD.

WHY: The RFI asked for ideas on how to heed calls from the Pentagon and Congress to significantly boost the use of virtualization technology at agencies. An indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract, potentially spanning five years, could come after the RFI.

Virtualization is not a one-size-fits-all game for agencies, the RFI said. “In order to provide support to the entire DOD platform, organizations will need various techniques, methods or approaches of creating a virtual hardware platform, operating system, storage device, or network resources.”

The Defense Information Systems Agency and other agencies that issued the RFI are looking for a vendor with a track record: respondents are asked to “describe your ability or history providing a solution across many service agencies.”
