New CIO named in Delaware

Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner announced a new technology chief Aug. 2.

Thomas Jarrett is the state's new chief information officer, leading the newly created Department of Technology and Information as well as the Office of Information Services.

Jarrett was the director of government, education and philanthropy affairs for Verizon Delaware.

According to the state's announcement, Jarrett will oversee Delaware's technology issues and change the Office of Information Services into the new Department of Technology and Information.

The governor's Information Services Task Force called for the creation of the new agency in May 8 report titled "E-volution: Redefining Delaware's IT Management Strategy for the 21st Century."

Jarrett starts Sept. 4. He will manage the Office of Information Services until June 2003, when it will be dissolved. No employees will lose jobs, as everyone will be shifted to the new technology department.

Jarrett worked for Verizon for more than 28 years. Among other things, he worked to develop applications using technology in the classroom. He also designed a fiber-optic network that schools use for distance learning.
