Army school to get welding simulators
SGI and VRSim are providing six systems for training troops in battlefield vehicle repairs.
Silicon Graphics Inc. and VRSim, a maker of simulation software, will provide welding simulators to the U.S. Army Ordinance Center and School.
The companies have sold six simulators to the school, which is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. The devices will be used to train soldiers and Marines for battlefield vehicle repairs. SGI Professional Services designed and integrated the simulators, which have been dubbed Virtual Reality Welding Trainers. The sale was announced on Wednesday, but the value was not disclosed.
The simulators initially will be used for training in gas metal arc welding and shielded metal arc welding. According to SGI, adding gas tungsten arc welding to the project is under consideration.
