Matthews resigns as Transportation CIO
The Transportation Department CIO plans to return to Lockheed Martin, where he worked for 17 years before three-year stint in government.
Dan Matthews, the Transportation Department’s chief information officer, is the latest federal information technology executive to resign from office. Matthews said he plans to return to Lockheed Martin, where he worked for 17 years.
“I look forward to continuing working in the federal IT community and helping federal agencies accomplish their mission,” he said in a telephone interview.
Matthews has been a steady figure in IT circles and has served as vice chairman of the CIO Council, the federal advisory board for CIOs. In 2004 he received the top leadership award from the Association for Federal Information Resources Management's annual leadership award ceremony.
In receiving the award, Matthews told a gathering that "it takes leadership to turn mud and straw into bricks."
"IT will not happen without you," he said in a speech. The federal workforce is responsible for extending government technology to people nationwide.
Matthews announced his resignation to his staff Tuesday morning. His deputy, Jackie Patillo, will become the acting CIO, which is a political appointment.
