NOAA CIO moves to Energy

Carl Staton, chief information officer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will step into the role of deputy CIO at the Energy Department Oct. 1.

Officials have not yet decided what to do in terms of filling the NOAA CIO position, he said today.

"All options are being investigated," Staton said.

Gordon Errington, the current DOE deputy CIO, plans to retire Sept. 30, after a 33-year career in the military and federal civil service.

Staton has spent his entire 27-year federal career at NOAA, most recently serving as CIO for more than four years.

The technical and career opportunities at DOE lured him away, he said.

"The scope of work at Energy is quite large,” Staton said. “They have some very challenging [information technology] security issues. I’m looking forward to working with them. The No. 1 priority over there is their IT security."

He added that he is also excited about managing DOE's large supercomputing facilities.
