Federal 100: Emery Csulak

The work: Identifying and correcting security weaknesses in mission-critical systems and devising a new approach to security based on continuous monitoring.

The impact: Csulak not only helped DHS raise its Federal Information Security Management Act score, but he also provided the Office of Management and Budget with recommendations on how to apply continuous monitoring at other agencies.

The nuts and bolts: Csulak adapted DHS’ existing security metrics to a continuous monitoring process. He also identified common security controls being used for multiple information systems, making it possible to streamline testing and documentation departmentwide.
