Robert Dilonardo
CIO
Domestic Nuclear Detection Office

Homeland Security Department

The work: Leading the development of a nationwide system for sharing information about the detection of radiological materials that could be used for terrorist attacks.

The impact: Dilonardo’s approach to integrating information from detection and diagnostic systems deployed by federal, state and local agencies provides a model that could be used to respond to chemical, biological and explosive threats.

The nuts and bolts: Dilonardo based the prototype on commercial technology and industry standards for information sharing. Working well beyond his role of managing IT for his agency, he organized a live demonstration of the system with participants from several federal and state agencies.
