Engineering security. The Obama administration's cybersecurity framework for critical infrastructure -- released in 1.0 form in February -- was arguably the central IT initiative of 2013. And without Thomlinson, it would likely still be languishing in beta. The Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board, which he leads, provided expert advice on the framework, the secure management of medical devices and the development of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's cryptographic guidance. Thomlinson began his career by specializing in cryptography and protocols, and at Microsoft, he has worked on hardening some of the world's most popular cybertargets. That hard-earned experience is now paying dividends governmentwide.
