Find out online if you were an OPM breach victim
The Office of Personnel Management has launched an online portal for victims, and people who think they may be victims, of the massive data breach.
After a soft test launch last month, the Office of Personnel Management officially rolled out its Cybersecurity Resource Center on Dec. 1.
Coming just weeks before OPM plans to finish sending hard copy notifications to 21.5 million breach victims, the portal serves both those who have already received notification of their victim status, and those who are still waiting to hear.
For confirmed victims, the portal offers information on and a place to sign up for identity protection services. The portal also helps victims understand whether their information was compromised in the breach of fingerprint data or not.
For those federal employees and others who might have been affected by the breach and who haven't received a letter about the OPM breach, the portal may hold the answer.
Besides informing citizens if they were exposed or not, the portal will also help OPM correct the small percentage of incorrect addresses that have led to letters being returned as undeliverable, said OPM spokesman Sam Schumach. As people put their information into the portal, OPM plans to use that information to update its records and resend hard copy letters where appropriate.
