Navy to groom 'ethical hackers'
So-called "red teamers" are in high demand and less-than-full supply at the Defense Department.
WHAT: The Naval Supply Systems Command (NSSC) is looking for a contractor to train "ethical hackers" to probe Navy networks for security bugs.
WHY: The only way to have a shot at good network defense, security experts say, is to think like an attacker. But so-called "red teamers" are in high demand and less-than-full supply at the Defense Department.
The NSSC wants to spin up a team of 34 such hackers, with training to take place at a Defense Acquisition University facility in San Diego. The training will include lectures, "team activities" and case studies, according to an NSSC solicitation. The training should cover a slew of security controls and be based on core competencies outlined in the government's National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, the solicitation said.
The training will last four days, with the fifth day for certification testing.
