House committee wants details on DOD, DHS West Coast offices

With an eye on the budget, a key house committee has asked the secretaries of the Defense and Homeland Security departments for more information on their California-based technology development and recruiting efforts.
In letters sent May 31 to Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson, members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee ask for details about the staffing and budget levels of the two agencies' Silicon Valley offices.
DOD announced new leaders and organizational structure for its Defense Innovation Unit Experimental in May. DIUx seeks to make the case to innovators and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley that the military can be a key partner and companies can play a special role in national security.
DHS opened an office in Silicon Valley to bolster its relationship with companies in the area and to foster technology research and development.
The letters ask Carter and Johnson for briefings on strategic objectives and implementation plans by June 14.
