Data Security in the Cloud: The New Discipline

According a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), agencies are continuing to hit roadblocks as the transition to cloud computing and retire legacy systems. The main concern -- there’s no guarantee to ensuring security in the cloud, which keeps many agencies from fully moving business- and mission-critical services to the cloud. Although there was progress in complying with the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB’s) “cloud-first” policy, gaps in compliance and security continue to persist.

Cloud computing entails the usual requirements of traditional IT security, but presents an added level of risk due to the difficulty of maintaining data integrity and security in an virtualized environment. While caution about the security of government data is always warranted, it need not be an obstacle.

Today’s standards do not require data to be encrypted in the database or data system. Can cloud-based data be afforded the same protection available in a traditional IT environment?
