The federal government is a 5G pioneer. Agencies and the military are finding ways to leverage the wireless technology for a widening array of data-heavy applications. The U.S. military, in particular, is on 5G’s cutting edge, leveraging the next-generation wireless technology for practical and innovative functions that could also be used in civilian applications.
The DOD’s $1.5B 5G experimentation and testing program at 12 U.S. military test sites explores forward-leaning applications such as augmented/virtual reality for mission planning and training, smart warehouses, and enhanced distributed command and control. Federal civilian agencies, such as the U.S. Post Office, are also looking to 5G for a variety of applications, including geolocation and broadband deployment.
With the widening use of 5G, however, security concerns loom. In the shadow of wider government network breaches, nailing down 5G security takes on added urgency. New approaches to cyber defense, such as zero trust, can have a significant impact on the new implementations.
