Rear Adm. Kenneth Slaght officially took over command of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Friday, replacing Rear Adm. John Gauss, who retired.

Rear Adm. Kenneth Slaght officially took over command of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Friday, replacing Rear Adm. John Gauss, who retired.

Gauss assumed command of Spawar March 20, 1998. Slaght became Spawar's vice commander Sept. 14, 2000, after serving as the command's chief engineer and program manager for the Navy satellite communications program office.

Gauss has not yet publicly announced where his next job will be but said late last year that he would consider taking over a start-up company with a small capitalization that had exclusively commercial customers.

The Senate last week made progress on several of President Bush's nominations. Among those:

David Chu was confirmed as undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness.

Bruce Marshall Carnes was confirmed as chief financial officer of the Energy Department.

Bruce Mehlman was confirmed as assistant secretary of Commerce for technology policy at the Commerce Department.

Stephen Perry was confirmed as the administrator of the General Services Administration.

James Edward Rogan was nominated to be undersecretary of Commerce for intellectual property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Marc Zoellner has been named senior manager of e-Government Solutions at Grant Thornton LLP, the nation's sixth largest accounting and management consulting firm, according to an announcement by the company last week.

Zoellner will help build Grant Thornton's Information Technology Consulting practice for the Global Government Group's civilian practice. Bringing him on board will enable the firm to offer a broader variety of services to its government customers.

Zoellner has over 15 years experience in consulting and business development to the public and private sectors.

Joe Sandhu was appointed president and chief operating officer of NetCompliance Inc., the company announced this week. NetCompliance provides "paperless" compliance solutions, online worker training programs, and safety products for companies regulated by the federal government.

Sandhu was formerly senior vice president of Computer Associates International Inc. He also has held senior positions with ML Technologies Inc., the Inter-American Development Bank and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
