A case for an upgrade

Charles Cunningham Jr., director of the Defense Security Service, is counting on technology upgrades to help speed the security clearance process. One such improvement is the Electronic Personnel Security Questionnaire, which went online April 30. It allows the centers that process military recruits to submit live scans of recruits' fingerprints to the FBI for a criminal background check. "They can know within the next day if there's a problem," he said.

EPSQ can also shorten the security investigation process because data is sent electronically rather than mailed and the questionnaire will not submit answers that are incorrect or incomplete.
