CIO Council puts $1.2m toward portals
The Chief Information Officers Council's electronic-government committee has approved $1.2 million to fund eight cross-agency Web portals.
The Chief Information Officers Council's electronic-government committee has approved $1.2 million to fund eight cross-agency Web portals.The committee received 17 proposals and chose eight based on their potential public benefit, innovation, transferability, number of participating agencies, ease of implementation, strength of government and public support, cost efficiency and privacy protection.The money comes from the roughly $33 million allocated by the Office of Management and Budget this year for electronic-government projects [GCN, July 23, Page 1, ].The funding for each project varies:

- Service locator and portal builder tool for existing portals from the Social Security Administration, Seniors.gov, and Education Department, Students.gov: $500,000 total
- Housing and Urban Development's Virtual Home Center: $225,000
- New service portal proposed by the Health and Human Services Department for low-income citizens: $200,000
- Developing an interagency MapStats for Kids: $90,000
- Developing Deep Web Search program for the multiagency Science.gov site: $90,000
- Developing an interagency database browse function for Science.gov: $85,000
- Volunteer service portals to benefit land management agencies: $10,000.
