Rather than a single program, the Defense Department's information infrastructure is a web of communications networks, computers, software, databases, applications, weapon system interfaces, and security and other services that meet the needs of DOD users across the range of military missions. It was conceived in 1992 as a way of revolutionizing information exchange across the department.
