DOD activates site for disabled
User-friendly Web site has assistive technology accommodations for agency users with disabilities
The Defense Department this week activated a user-friendly Web site that has assistive technology accommodations for people with disabilities who work at DOD and other agencies.
The new Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) Web site, www.tricare.osd.mil/cap, features an enhanced online accommodation process and a better assistive technology section, said Dinah Cohen, CAP director. It also has an improved virtual CAP Technical Center tour, which users can navigate for help selecting the most appropriate and reasonable accommodations.
Cohen said that the site was redesigned to be more accommodating for users and now "allows customers, people with disabilities and federal managers to customize their personal search for program and contact information."
DOD launched CAP in 1990 to eliminate employment barriers for people with visual, hearing, dexterity and cognitive disabilities. Since its inception, the program has funded and provided, free of charge, more than 30,000 accommodation solutions including specialized equipment and human expertise to about 50 federal agencies.
CAP offerings include:
* TTY machines and TTY software for people with hearing disabilities.
* Voice-recognition software for those with dexterity disabilities.
* Software designed to overcome cognitive disabilities.
* Braille displays and screen readers.
