The Defense Department has named 11 mentor/protégé programs to receive the 2004 Nunn-Perry award.

The award honors relationships between large companies and small firms that they mentor. The intent is to encourage formal mentor/protégé programs that help small companies establish themselves in the federal market.

This year, EDS, IBM Corp. and Northrop Grumman Mission Systems are among the large companies that won — for their work with Automation Precision Technology LLC, Communication Technology Inc. and Computer and Hi-tech Management Inc., respectively.

According to DOD, the 2004 winners come from 10 states and represent a variety of industries, including information technology, environmental remediation and construction. Ten of the 11 are first-time winners.
