Meagher, Altman fly with Eagles

Edward Meagher, deputy chief information officer at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Anne Altman, managing director of IBM Federal, won Eagle awards March 23 at the 16th annual Federal 100 Awards gala.

In addition, the 2005 Monticello Award, which recognizes an information system that has a direct, meaningful impact on American lives, went to Archangel, a project developed by the city and county of Los Angeles to identify key vulnerable sites and coordinate information about them.

Meagher led the effort to help welcome home and train service men and women seriously injured in the Iraqi conflict. Recognizing that soldiers -- including many amputees -- would need retraining, he created Vet IT, a program that enables soldiers to volunteer at the VA and gain work experience while they continue their rehabilitation. He also helped arrange weekly dinners at Fran O’Brien’s Stadium Steakhouse for soldiers being treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to help them readjust to a civilian world.

Altman oversaw the expansion of IBM Federal’s business by more than two and a half times the average market growth. Her unit provided $2.5 billion in services to government customers. At the same time, she helped the company grow in ways that made it a more valuable resource to government agencies as well as systems integrators.

A group of independent judges selected the winners of the Eagle and Monticello awards. Eagle Awards are given to two Federal 100 recipients -- one representing government and another from industry -- who made a particular impact in the government IT community in the previous year.
