NASCIO gets $500,000 grant for information sharing

The Justice Department has awarded a $500,000 grant to the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) to promote the use of a national model for interoperability and information sharing.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance grant for 2006-2007 will help:

• Promote use of the Global Justice Exchange Data Model (GJXDM), which is a national standard specifically designed for criminal justice agencies to exchange information effectively and quickly.

• Expand the GJXDM to include environmental protection requirements.

• Expand the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), an initiative that extends GJXDM toward a national-level interoperable information sharing and data exchange, into other lines of business.

• Create a liaison between the NIEM initiative and state governments.

• Market NASCIO’s enterprise architecture program.

• Provide enterprise architecture technical assistance to state governments.

• Identify and catalog critical information exchanges between the different lines of business and levels of government.

• Address data quality issues regarding information sharing

According to a press release, NASCIO will include the Environmental Protection Agency and the departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security and Transportation in this initiative.
