FCW Insider: Williams to get his hearing

It isn't totally official yet, but Jim Williams, commissioner of GSA's Federal Acquisition Service and the Bush administration's nominee to be GSA administrator, has his confirmation hearing. That being said, use pencil. The date hasn't been announced publicly yet. That being said, we hear that the hearing has been schedule for July 24. We are told that it is a safe bet that the committee will hold the hearing before the Senate recess in mid-August, and July 24 is seeming pretty likely.Getting a quick hearing date is good news, but Williams would still need to get confirmed. Of course, GSA acting administrator DavidBibb's last day is Aug. 30, and, as I ,

mentioned earlierthe Senate calendar has lawmakers out for the rest of the year. The Senate calendar notes that they returned on July 7 and the August recess starts on Aug. 8. (The Senate calendar says Aug. 9 — a Saturday — but, as I said earlier, we all know that Capitol Hill will be a ghost town starting on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 7.)

In addition, the Democratic National Convention is in Denver Aug. 25-28, and the Republican National Convention is Sept. 1-4.

But getting a hearing date is an important step. With any luck, lawmakers will move quickly and Williams will be able to take the corner office.
