FCW Insider: Web filter stalls Web 2.0 (at FCW anyway)

Earlier today FCW news editor Michael Hardy, reporting from the Executive Leadership Conference in Williamsburg, Va., asked me to look up a recent FCW article about MySpace. Seemed reasonable enough. But when I entered "MySpace" in our search engine, this is the message I got back:

This website is blocked. Please contact your System Administrator

Hmm. That can't be right. But sure enough, a Google search on MySpace returned the same message.

If you have been reading FCW.com at all during the last year, you know we are pretty much all over this Web 2.0 stuff. But apparently our knowledge of social networking will now be limited to guesswork and theory…

This problem, of course, is familiar to many of our readers. As I noted in this week's Buzz of the Week, more and more agencies are discovering the wonders of social networking technology. But in many agencies, I'm guessing, the Web 2.0 revolution is on hold until IT administrators agree to unblock those social networking sites.

Update: My Web filter is now MySpace friendly. Whew. Let the revolution continue.
