Shea founded the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) and the GEOINT Symposium to bring people who work in geospatial intelligence together and promote the profession.

Geospatial intelligence is of growing importance to many intelligence-related disciplines, but there has traditionally been little interaction among the groups involved in geospatial intelligence. Shea’s USGIF started an academic certification program for geospatial intelligence and has brought thousands of intelligence professionals to symposiums.

“[Shea’s] thought leadership is most evidenced by his role in the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation, where he was an original founder and serves as chairman,” said Bill Ballhaus, president and chief executive officer of DynCorp International. “In five years, he has worked to create the leading forum for bringing together industry and government intelligence professionals to promote a critical discipline in intelligence trade craft.”
