Federal 100: Lt. Col. William E. Geesey

Lt. Col. William E. Geesey

Medical Communications for Combat Casualty Care
U.S. Army

The work: Pressing an existing battlefield medical information system into service in support of the Army’s suicide prevention campaign.

The impact: Geesey’s team fielded a new telehealth capability for MC4 that speeds soldiers’ access to potentially lifesaving mental health care.

The nuts and bolts: The technology digitally connects at-risk soldiers in Afghanistan with mental health specialists for private consultations. Geesey’s team fielded the technology quickly and for less than $50,000. The Army’s surgeon general reported that 70 percent of the soldiers seen through the new capability would not have received services otherwise, and the Army quickly expanded the program to reach even more soldiers.
